The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van: 4-Cylinder vs. 6-Cylinder

Capable and customizable, there isn’t much the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter can’t do for Las Vegas businesses. Although it sports the Three-Pointed Star on its grille, there’s almost nothing conventionally luxurious about this workhorse. At the core of the Sprinter Van’s power are two turbo-diesel engines—both having a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds without breaking a sweat. Below, we’ve outlined a few differences between the Sprinter Van’s 4-cylinder vs. 6-cylinder engines, as well as the importance of choosing an authorized service center!

4-Cylinder vs. 6-Cylinder: Which is Better?

The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van comes standard with a 2.1L turbo-diesel 4-cylinder engine, rated at 161 hp and 265 lb-ft of torque. This Mercedes-Benz turbo diesel engine gets paired with a 7-speed automatic and uses two-stage turbocharging and Direct Injection to siphon as much power as possible from less fuel. Compared to the V6, the 4-cylinder turbo diesel engine saves you up to 18% in fuel costs. That’s not to say, however, that the V6 engine doesn’t offer some of its own perks.

An optional Sprinter engine is a 188-hp 3.0L turbo-diesel V6 engine with Direct Injection and a turbocharger intercooler. Not only does the V6 offer a stronger punch of power, it creates an astonishing 325 lb-ft of torque, which is more than competitors like the Nissan NV. High torque production can be especially beneficial for commercial vans because it helps the engine produce greater low-speed power. This serves to lengthen service life and give fuel economy a boost.

Importance of Expert Service

The powered-by-diesel Sprinter Van uses a special diesel exhaust fluid, AdBlue®, for lower emissions and fuel usage. This is known as BlueEFFICIENCY®—a term coined by Mercedes-Benz. To ensure your Sprinter engine continues to earn high torque and low emission ratings, it’s important to choose Master Certified Technicians. The team at Fletcher Jones Imports is factory-trained to service Sprinter Vans and has the OEM parts and fluids on hand to get the job done right.
